Summer 2017 Update!

Yup Yup Yup, I’m still here.

So what’s been going on the past few months in the life of the Don?

Well I’ve been keeping myself pretty busy with work at Jack Victor (and loving it). I keep myself on a pretty rigorous routine (I’m up at 4:45 every morning to get an early morning workout in). And I work right up until 6 pm so by the time I get home I don’t have much energy or brainpower left, hence the large gaps in my posting.

Another thing that has happened is that I have left my side gig with Eph Apparel after about 2 and a half years. I just did not have enough time or energy to dedicate to the hustle that it entailed. I will forever to be grateful to them for the opportunity to learn about and sell made to measure custom suiting . That opportunity came about at a time in my life where I needed extra money being a student in Ottawa. I have nothing but full respect for the whole team there and wish them continued success.

In leaving my gig with Eph, I did it because I wanted to focus more on growing myself in my career at Jack Victor and to a certain degree, get back to running this blog a little bit with more frequent updates and useful posts for you all. Since I am officially on vacation in the coming week, look for at least one post. Stay tuned for more 😉

Late Spring/Early Summer Essentials 2016: An Everyman’s Guide

So we are well into spring and just a month or so off from summer (finally!) You’ve probably seen your favorite style magazine (GQ, Esquire) push some pretty stylish threads for the season. Well nevermind that crap (a $1,500 denim jacket? Please, Levis is just fine for me). I give you here a list of some essentials for the season and where to score em for prices you can actually afford without blowing your rent/mortgage/grocery money on.

  1. A cotton or linen suit:

linen suit

The temps are rising on a daily basis no doubt, and you’re going to have some weddings to go to. Instead of being that guy with sweat patches under his arms, be the guy that’s calm, cool and collected. Get a linen suit and wear the hell out of it to any occasion possible. I know what you’re going to say “oh but it wrinkles” and to that I say “man up and embrace the wrinkles, own the look and look sharp and be comfortable” To get more versatility out of it, wear the jacket and pants separately.

Where to buy?

Eph Apparel of course, where you can get it custom made to your body for $299! (Bonus: Add a cotton/linen dress shirt to the look to stay even cooler on the hottest days)

2. Sleek, minimalist watch

download (1)

Big fancy watches with chunky dials? No thanks. Instead go for a sleek minimalist faced watch like a Danial Wellington. Best part about this watch? You can swap out straps, get a leather one to dress it up, or a cloth one for a sportier look.

Where to buy?

Yeah, you could get it for $200-250 in a store or off the company’s website, but I’ve seen them on Amazon for $140-165. Gotta love Amazon!

3. White Canvas Sneakers

s-l300

Is there anything more basic than a pair of white canvas kicks? Pair them with jeans/chinos/shorts, they’ll look great. Just don’t wear them with suits, I don’t care what the *bleep* GQ says. If they get dirty and look a bit worn, even better.

Where to buy?

Sure, classic Converse kicks don’t cost that much but just head over to H&M and grab them for $24.99. No logo on em, just crisp and clean (until you beat some life into them).

4. Silk Knit Tie

10152009_443474839119608_873829877_n

Ahhh the silk knit. Can be worn with your regular suit and dress shirt or a more casual, yet classy vibe with chinos/dark jeans and an oxford cloth shirt. Very versatile indeed.

Where to buy?

Keep your eyes peeled for deals, I’ve gotten some at liquidation sales for about $10. Or you can head over to The Tie Bar , browse their extensive selection and nab one for $25. If you’re feeling like you need more of a bargain, hunt at thrift shops and vintage shops. You may just be able to snag one that’s unique as hell for a steal of a price!

5. Light trenchcoat

Burberry-Brit-men-lightweight-packaway-trench-coat-1-1

Just because the weather is warm, doesn’t mean it ain’t going to rain. You need a versatile lightweight trench that’ll keep you dry without making you sweat bullets inside. Best part about a coat like this? It’ll look good whether you’ve got a suit on, or just jeans and a tee.

Where to buy?

As nice and classic as Burberry trenches are, we ain’t got that kind of money to be blowing on one. For one that looks just as nice for under $200, check out ASOS or Simons.

6. Funky-Patterned Short Sleeve Shirt

seven7-jeans-short-sleeve-floral-shirt-382826-medium.jpg

Ok, so I may have jacked this “trend” from GQ’s Most Stylish Men List, but hey they’re not always so bad, I do still have a subscription with them after all. Get yourself a patterned short sleeve shirt and wear it with a slim (not skinny, seriously, who wants their balls chafing in there on a warm day?) dark pair of jeans or shorts.

Where to buy?

Simons has quite a selection as does Zara. Ranging in price from $40-50.

7. Lightweight Chinos

wpid-20140407_181454.jpg

Ahh the chino, such a versatile option when it comes to pants. Dress em up, dress em down, they’ll always look good. What doesn’t feel good though is a heavyweight cotton chino in the dead of a hot day. Instead, get a pair of lightweight chinos in a fit that doesn’t cut off the circulation to your calves or man-parts (Can you tell I’m over the whole ‘skinny’ trend?). Bonus points for going for a bold color like a baby blue or pink! You’ll thank me later 😉

Where to buy?

All my lightweight chinos come from one place. J-Crew Factory Store. Get a pair for about $40.

8. White Jeans/Pants

20150506_151902

Another look that some men shy away from. White jeans or pants is a look that just screams “Summer” and “Euro”. Much like with chinos I find you can dress them up or dress them down. Roll up the cuffs and show off some ankle, because why the hell not?

Where to buy?

A multitude of options here really. H&M’s got some for $30 and Simons has some at $60. Always keep your eyes peeled for sales though, as I feel white pants don’t sell as much as other colors thus usually get marked down.

9. Sunglasses

wpid-20140512_174510.jpg

Last but not least on this list, this one is obviously a no-brainer. Shades serve both a function and add pizzazz to any outfit. Sure designer shades like Ray Bans and Gucci are nice, but if you’re like me and tend to stuff your shades in your glove box then….

Where to buy?

Just grab a few pairs in different styles at places like  H&M, or Simons. You’ll have more than 1 look, for a fraction of the price of a designer one.

There you have it gents. There is no need to break the bank in order to look good this upcoming summer. Once you’re making the big bucks, then you can go more upscale. Until then, you can still look just as good! 😉

Looks of the Month (and update!)

Hello Dapperites,

So I realized that I have not posted in a long time, reason being is my increasingly intense workload for school. This has been without a doubt the most challenging semester I’ve faced in my academic career and next semester looks to no doubt top that!

Having said that, I just would like to share some of my favorite outfits that I rocked in the month of November.

IMG_20151124_205753

Going to start with a more casual look here, but I absolutely love this sweater that was given to me by a co-worker who had it sitting in his drawer for years and years. I believe it is a 1970s-80s sweater and it is from Harry Rosen. The colors are superb and really elevate a casual look. I paired it here with dark jeans, leather converse kicks and casual fedora just for the hell of it! And while I’m on the subject of vintage clothing, you should seriously scout out some vintage shops for unique, one of a kind pieces to bring your outfit together or just to stand out of the mold. My personal favorite one is Ragtime here in Ottawa.

IMG_20151114_081843

Here I am in this one rocking a nice blue on blue look. The blazer was actually given to me by a friend who has a tendency to buy things that don’t always fit or that he doesn’t like, (Thanks Danial!). The subtle dots in it are a nice touch for standing out. My trusty blue oxford shirt (with collar buttons unbuttoned for that sprezzatura touch!) and my Movember mustache tie and tie bar, from EPH Apparel. The pocket square is a little out of the picture but it is a beauty army-camo pattern made in Italy, and a steal from J-Crew’s clearance section for $5 (after using my student discount) a few months back.

IMG_20151107_214538

This was an all-business look I had going on for work that day. The lighting is a little bad but it is a deep navy with thin pinstripes Calvin Klein suit that I had hanging in my closet at my parent’s house and almost forgot about. Was actually my Dad’s but he never wore it much, jacket fit like a charm just had to have the pants taken in and the waist extended. Paired with a white shirt and a bold red tie (Runaway Stripe from The Tie Bar) and white linen pocket square. This is one of the rare times you will see me rocking skinny ties, as I am over the whole trend, but will not just chuck out my collection of them. The look is completed by brown shoes and beige Zara trenchcoat.

IMG_20151116_165304

Taking it back to casual here, but preppy casual. Once again dark blue jeans are used here (dark denim is very versatile!), white Brooks Brothers oxford shirt (the best in my opinion, love the collar roll on them) layered under a green merino wool v-neck. This look was accessorized with my favorite fall/winter cap, a beautiful camel colored wool/cashmere blend from Brooks Brothers and a warm, yet thin brown lambswool scarf made in Scotland I picked up at my work (Brooks Brothers of course!) for a whole $10 on clearance!

IMG_20151121_101500

And we go right back to being dressy here. Now, it is not often that I wear colors like black, but gotta bust em out once in a blue moon eh? In this case I overemphasized neutral colors like black and grey (black Zara blazer, 1 button, a rarity to see! and grey trousers), a black and white houndstooth pattern shirt), white pocket square, so I was able to make my tie stand out more. While the tie may look like a Burberry because of it’s pattern, I will admit it is not, actually picked this one up on eBay a few years back for like $2 haha.

IMG_20151126_221553 (1)

This look kind of blurs the line between causal and dressy, which is why I love it. Here I rocked my burgundy merino wool turtleneck, my tartan blazer (both picked up at a liquidation sale a few years ago for like $30 total!), grey flannel-like trousers (I say flannel-like because they are actually a mix of wool, cotton and linen) and the usual white linen pocket square. The whole “turtleneck under a jacket” look is one that I fully endorse and have for years, seems that GQ is on board with this one too. I would even rock this under a suit, oh wait I already have!

IMG_20151129_100328

Now let me finish with my last worthy outfit of November. This is a quintessential Brooks Brothers look from top-to-bottom, probably because every item I am wearing here (besides the watch and underwear, but including undershirt) is from Brooks. We got a cotton navy blazer, timeless blue oxford, beige chinos, burgundy medallion tie, pocket square, and flashy, non matching, go-to-hell don’t give a f*ck socks all from Brooks Brothers. I guess when you work in a store you love, you tend to buy a lot from them (employee discount baby!). The watch in this outfit was a beautiful gift from Ms. Dapper’s parents. I have never been a watch guy before, but after wearing this one all weekend I have changed my mind!

To end this post, I would like to say thank you to all who donated during my Movember campaign (not too late for a few more donations though!. Here is my last day with the ‘stache:

IMG_20151201_131416

I have now shaved it off and plan to go full-out bearded from December until April, I will not touch a razor. I will be using beard oil to keep it nice and soft though, so expect a review on Dollar Beard Club coming up in the next couple of months!

As always, stay dapper my friends!

Dapper as EPH: Part 2

Hellooooo again Dapperites,

Earlier today I promised that I would post an update of me wearing my new custom suit, so here it is:

IMG_20151105_184013

A beautiful custom fit in a loud pattern and a double breast as you can see (can’t forget the flashy green socks as well!)

IMG_20151105_184058

Complete with the “Rusty Mustache” Tie and Tie Bar I mentioned earlier. You can really see in this shot how wide the lapels are, just how I like em! Wide lapels are definitely in if you’re looking for a bold, European look.

IMG_20151105_210539

In case you were wondering how cuffed suit pants look, here it is. I just like the retroness of them, I always dress to be different. Like I always say, better to stand out than to blend in!

If anyone is interested in a custom suit or shirt, feel free to contact me: andrewm@ephapparel.com

Till next time, Stay Dapper my Friends 😉

Dapper as EPH

As many of you know, I moonlight as a personal style representative for a great company, EPH Apparel. Recently I took advantage of my employee discount to get myself that one flashy, showoff suit I’ve always wanted. I’ve always desired a windowpane pattern in a double breasted variety with wide peak lapels and cuffed pants, along with suspender buttons (and belt loops, making it versatile)  so it should come as no surprise that that is exactly what I ordered!

Since my measurements are already on file, my order came in relatively quick and I felt like a kid on Christmas morning when I got the box

IMG_20151103_114710 IMG_20151103_114720

As you can see, the suit comes perfectly folded and packed and includes a garment bag (a nice touch). Also pictured is the tie I picked up which is of lovely thick silk for a perfect knot.

In all its glory!

In all its glory!

You can see that I went with a light blue windowpane pattern and the black buttons on it really make it pop against the light backdrop of the fabric. You can also see the tie that I picked up with it. A better shot of it here.

Oh, and how can I forget the funky liner I chose along with my monogram (a song from one of my idols, Ol’ Blue Eyes, Frank Sinatra)

IMG_20151103_114855

This suit will go perfect with my recent shirt and cufflink order that I recently received from EPH as well (when you have a discount, you use it!)

French cuffs, spread collar and silver knot cufflinks

As a bonus, and to support Movember (in addition to shaving my face fully for the only time all year), I also picked up the “Rusty Mustache” tie and tie bar (we are running specials on the 2 and 25% of your purchase goes to the Movember foundation). Speaking of which, you can donate to my campaign here. (Shameless plug intended)

Wanna see how this whole ensemble looks on me? Well check back tonight for an update 😉

Weekend in Style Review

When I first started this blog, I used to post often my “look of the day” …lately I’ve strayed from it, so consider this a return!!

24657

Starting with Friday night, a swanky night out to the Plateau Lounge at the W-Hotel in Montreal for a birthday. (My favorite lounge in the city by the way). The key to this look, the white linen blazer of course! Taking a pink patterned dress shirt with a blue plaid tie on royal blue chinos and throwing on the white linen blazer for that touch of summertime pizzazz! Lot’s of people are intimidated by a white jacket or suit, as with most bold looks, confidence is always key!

20150628_002932

Saturday was a little more casual night out at the movies. Just rocking a short sleeve denim shirt and navy chinos. I will say this about the denim shirt with 2 pockets, I recommend it, I love it. Always feel like I got that hard working man’s vibe when wearing it. Picked mine up at H&M in NYC last summer but you can find these just about anywhere these days.

IMG_20150628_083918

And prior to the weekend, I measured up my brother for a custom EPH Apparel  shirt. If you’re like me or him and can never find a perfect fitting suit or shirt off the rack, you definitely need to get in touch with me. Shirts are $64.99 to $84.99 and suits from $300 to $600. Go custom today!
